Preparedness: The Key to
Assisting in Disaster Relief
Efforts
Dr. Rob Dunne, vice chief of emergency
medicine at St. John Hospital and
Medical Center, located in Detroit,
also serves on the federal response
DMAT (Disaster Medical Assistance
Team) and is slated for the next
deployment to Haiti to provide
medical care to those impacted by
the earthquakes that have devastated
the island. Serving on the DMAT
since 1996, Dr. Dunne shares his
suggestions on how medical
professionals can get involved in
disaster relief efforts.
“I
am in daily briefings on the
situation in Haiti and many
volunteers from other areas came
poorly prepared and are only a
little better off than refugees,
now. Responders need to be with
teams. They should be prepared to
supply their own food, water and
power.”
